Kevin Durant Says 35 is the Age He Can See Himself Retiring

RadioOnFire.com - Kevin Durant has 20,913 points in his career. He became the youngest player -- aside from LeBron James, to reach the 20K milestone when he got there at 29 years and 103 days old this past January. The feat predictably prompted many to ponder the possibility of him eventually eclipsing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's 38,387 mark atop the all-time scoring list. Too bad Durant has other ideas.

While discussing his standing among the NBA's greatest scorers during an interview with ESPN's Chris Haynes on Friday, June 8, KD confessed that he doesn't envision himself playing long enough to reign over the history books.

Kareem was 42 when he scored the last points he'd register before walking away from the game. LeBron's total for each season hovers in the ballpark of 2,000 points and at age 33 he is on pace to surge past Kareem in four years time. That would make him the scoring champion at age 37.

If we are to compare the arc of LBJ and KD's careers in order to project who might wind up being the top dog someday, it would be fair to assess that Durant's career would need to wind up being a year or two longer than his Cavs counterpart's. But he is only giving himself until 35 to do his damage.

“This game, your craft, you have to continue studying it. No matter how much you enjoy it, nobody wants to be in school that long. I know I don’t," Durant told Haynes. "At some point, you have to be ready to graduate. Thirty-five, that’s just a number in my mind.”
