Slain Firefighter Laid To Rest; Suspect Faces Judge For First Time

RadioOnFire.com - Volunteer firefighter Jon Hickey was laid to rest Thursday as the man accused of killing him faced a judge for the first time.
A funeral service was held Thursday afternoon at the Haight Funeral Home in Eldersburg. Hickey had just been accepted into the Baltimore City Fire Academy and was living in Upper Fells Point when he was killed Nov. 29.
Daniel Greene, 35, was arrested Tuesday and he appeared Thursday morning at a bail review. Greene -- a married, self-employed, father of two -- faces 11 charges including first-degree murder. The judge declared him "a danger to the public" and ordered Greene to be held without bail.
According to prosecutor David Chiu, the violence stemmed from a love triangle. Chiu told the judge that Greene "was the only person seen on videotape entering his ex-girlfriend's current boyfriend's residence."
Chiu said the victim "was executed" and that "he was shot once in the head while lying on the sofa."

Court charging documents allege Greene was caught on camera breaking into Hickey's East Pratt Street rowhome through a rear first-floor window.
Defense attorney Singleton Mathews prepared to contest the video in court and present an alibi, telling the judge that when his client was arrested at his auto repair shop in Norrisville, his wife was there and tried to tell detectives "that he was actually in bed next to her at the time this crime happened."
"There is somebody willing to testify as to where Mr. Greene was at the time this allegedly occurred," Mathews said.
Mathews also said that Greene has GPS on his car, which, if detectives had checked, would prove Greene never drove to Fells Point on the night of the killing and has never been to Fells Point in his life.
"At this point, there has not been anything produced -- shoes, any fingerprints, hair, DNA -- that would show that Mr. Greene has ever been to Fells Point," Mathews said. "He has no criminal record. He's had no contact with the criminal justice system. He doesn't even have a traffic ticket."
