Sandra Bland's Family Reaches $1.9M Settlement in Wrongful Death Suit

RadioOnFire.com - According to reports, the family of Sandra Bland has reached a $1.9 million settlement with Texas state authorities. The family's lawyer confirmed the settlement. For those who are unaware, Sandra Bland was a young black woman who in July 2015 was arrested by Texas police after a traffic stop and placed in a holding cell where she ended up dead by allegedly committing suicide by asphyxiation with a plastic garbage bag. The death of the young woman sparked outrage nationwide because of the fishy circumstances and lack of information surrounding her death.

The Waller County jail, where Bland was held, is responsible for paying back $1.8 million of the settlement to Bland's family while the Texas Department of Public Safety is responsible for paying $100,000 which is the maximum amount allowed under state law. Since the case has been settled, the case will no longer be going to a jury trial, which was supposed to begin in January 2017.
