Towson University Mourns Student Killed In Hit-And-Run Crash

RadioOnFire.com - Baltimore County police are trying to find the driver who struck a Towson University student over the weekend and left the scene.

Towson University students and faculty are grieving Mzimazisi Ncube, 20, a sophomore pre-accounting student who liked to be called Mzi. He was killed Saturday night in a hit-and-run crash.

"It's definitely tragic to see someone who's part of the Towson community go out especially the way he died. It's very sad," said Yohannes Sium, a Towson University student.

"That could have been any of us and it's just so unfortunate," said Jackie Noland, a Towson University student.

Baltimore County police said Ncube was crossing North Charles Street just below Ruxton Ridge Road in Towson when a Toyota Tundra or Toyota Sequoia traveling north hit him and fled.

"He was struck by the Toyota. The Toyota then fled the scene and left him on the pavement, where he was then struck again by another vehicle. That second vehicle did stop (and the driver) tried to render aid and called 911," Baltimore County police Officer Jennifer Peach said.

Police are trying to find the driver of the Toyota.

"You did it, you got to man up to it. That's terrible," said Jordan Daughtry, a Towson University student.

Police described the evidence left behind at the scene: "The shell or the casing of the driver's-side mirror or the glass from the mirror itself," Peach said.

The Ncube family released a statement, saying, "As a family, we are deeply saddened by the death of Mzimazisi Ncube. Mzi was known for his charisma, infectious sense of humor, caring attitude and affable smile."

In its statement, Towson University, said, "We mourn this tragic loss of young life. Our hearts are broken for his Greek life family, his fellow mentors in the Center for Student Diversity, as well as the student philanthropy volunteers he worked alongside while at TU."

"I think it's pretty terrible what happened. You can see a lot of students are very upset about it," said Nick Creteloa, a Towson University student.

Towson University will hold a vigil for Ncube at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Speakers Circle near Freedom Square in the middle of campus.
