The Board of Education of Baltimore County voted White into the position Tuesday night. White had previously been serving as the interim superintendent since last summer, after the abrupt resignation of Dallas Dance.

School board Chair Edward Gilliss cited White's experience in BCPS leadership over the past five years, and observations from teachers and administrators.
"I am confident that stability, that consistency, and that locally-rooted leadership are key for this system," he said in a statement. "I am confident that Verletta White will lead with strength and with passion and with a gentle nature.”
When her term begins on July 1, she will be the first woman to serve as the system's superintendent. She is the first county educator to serve as superintendent since Anthony Marchione, who retired in 2000.
