President Trump on Saturday jokingly hinted that the United States should “someday” follow the lead of China and put an end to presidential term limits.
In an audio recording obtained by CNN, Trump praised Chinese President Xi Jinping’s recent move to consolidate his power. "He's now president for life. President for life. And he's great," Trump told Republican donors during a closed-door Florida fundraiser. "And look, he was able to do that," he said. "I think it's great. Maybe we'll give that a shot someday."
Trump’s remarks come after China’s ruling Communist party announced plans to eliminate the two-term limit for the presidency, effectivity clearing the way for president Xi Jinping to stay power indefinitely. Should the proposal to amend China’s constitution that reads that no head of state “shall serve no more than two consecutive terms,” president Xi could rule past his 2023 term limit.
However, as for the United States, ending presidential term limits is a daunting task. After President Franklin Roosevelt was elected four times, Congress amended the U.S constitution in 1951 to limit presidents to two terms in the White House. To change the current law, two-thirds in both houses of Congress or two-thirds of state legislatures would have to initially support the change—while three-quarters of the states in the U.S would have to ratify the move.
