RadioOnFire.com - The TV show many look to for being able to predict the future has typically been The Simpsons. However, it looks like Chris Rock may also be onto something.
Back in 2014, the Brooklynite performed an opening skit on Saturday Night Live, poking fun at the commercialization of holidays. "It doesn't matter what the holiday is. Martin Luther King Day, it's gonna be the same thing. You're gonna be watching TV like, 'These Toyotas are practically free at last, free at last! These Toyotas are practically free at last!'" he joked.
Fast forward to 2018, and Dodge's RAM Truck Super Bowl commercial. It featured an excerpt from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s sermon, "The Drum Major Instinct," he delivered exactly 50 years to the day the commercial would air. Part of that same speech warned people not to spend too much on cars.
Many people found the ad downright ridiculous. On social media, users thought it was despicable Dr. King's legacy would be used to sell pickup trucks. However, the spot still had to get approval. Enter Eric Tidwell, who manages Dr. King's estate and handles licensing his intellectual property. He gave the green light on the ad saying in part, "We found that the overall message of the ad embodied Dr. King's philosophy that true greatness is achieved by serving others." Both Dr. King's daughter, Bernice and The King Center said they do not handle licensing.
