It's Official: Martin O'Malley Running For President

RadioOnFire.com - In a Saturday morning announcement, O'Malley officially kicked off his long-shot odyssey to become president of the United States where his political career began, Baltimore City.

"The story of our country's best days is not found in a history book, because this generation of Americans is about to write it, and that is why today, to you and to all who can hear my voice, I declare that I am a candidate for president of the United States, and I am running for you," O'Malley said in Federal Hill.

O'Malley touts himself as a liberal crusader who wants to restore America as the land of possibilities. He said the American dream seems to be hanging by a thread, although a strong one full of optimism.

"It is the thread of the generosity, the compassion and the love of one another that brings us together as one American people," O'Malley said.

Political analysts urge O'Malley to present himself as a can-do executive.

"'I am bringing something to the table that's vastly different than what you have seen in the past. I'm going to bring my experience from a major American city and from the state level,' that is something that he can point to," said John Bullock, assistant professor of political science at Towson University.

NBA: Kevin Love Says He Will Be In A Cavs Uniform Next Season

RadioOnFire.com - Every year toward the end of the season, trade rumors being to swirl about various players and this year, Kevin Love was on the chopping block again. There have been talks of Love leaving the Cavs for ventures like the Lakers but he recently spoke and claims to have no intentions on leaving Cleveland.

If you are currently on good terms with a team, why would you make it a point to let the world that you are considering other options, right? Kevin Love just landed in Cleveland but a shoulder injury in the first round of the playoffs has found the forward riding the bench. This is where the speculation begins to roll in. Realistically, Kevin Love’s impact on the Cavs was somewhat less than expected; nonetheless, he’s still a player with an impact.

When discussing his current situation in Cleveland, why would Love decide to leave the side of the best player in basketball? If he truly wants a chance to win multiple championships, the best option would be for him to stay put. Love recently addressed rumors of him departing and his response was simple about staying in Cleveland, “Yes sir.”

Love recently went under successful shoulder repair surgery and he is anticipating playing in the season opener for 2015-16 season. Again, of course he is supposed to stay politically correct with his response; but, if unless he is a money hungry individual and sees a better financial opportunity, it makes no sense for him to leave.

Mayor Says Rev. Jamal Bryant Has Been Warned By Her Administration

RadioOnFire.com - Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake sent a stern warning to those who want to tie traffic to protest.

That warning went to Rev. Jamal Bryant. C4 asked Mayor was asked why Bryant was was not arrested. The mayor answered that a lot of the blockages were police officers trying to prevent people from walking up the ramps during the protest.

That being said, she adds, "My administration has communicated directly with Bryant that, if he engages in behavior that disrupts our city, that he'll answer for that."

The mayor also spoke about the response period to street light outages in the city.

Several people in neighborhoods with street light outages called WBAL NewsRadio 1090 to report that they become more worried about the lack of light as the overnight crime escalates in the city.

The mayor says many of those street lights are the responsibility of BGE.

"We don't have any control over when they get to that job," she states.

Street light outages are responsibility of the city, the mayor explains. But she says the challenge is when BGE is responsible.

She goes on to say that her administration continues to push to get the job done. But that she has met with her team and the department of transportation, so they could use their resources to fix the problem when BGE is unable to. They are considering the us of tower lights in those areas until they are served by BGE

Are Baltimore Police Getting Back At State Attorney Mosby For Bringing Charges?

RadioOnFire.com - Once Baltimore State Attorney Marilyn Mosby brought charges to the six police officers involved in the death of Freddie Gray, the Fraternal Order of Police immediately showed their disapproval of the charges as well as their call for Mosby to be removed from the case. As summer approaches in Baltimore City, crime rates are rising but it seems like police are taking less and less action against it.

The death of Freddie Gray sparked a movement to refine policing in Baltimore City. This movement was initiated by the protests that took place throughout the city following Gray’s death but was overshadowed by the riots that engulfed Baltimore. Police made a number of arrests during the riots and it seems that the peace was restored for sometime once the officers involved were charged. However, policing throughout the city currently seems much more lax than usual and it is definitely intentional.

According to the president of the Baltimore Police Union, criminals in Baltimore are now “taking advantage” of the fact that six officers were charged in the death of Freddie Gray and as a result, they are not showing respect to officers and crimes are getting out of control. More surprisingly though the president of the union says, “Police are under siege in every quarter. They are more afraid of going to jail for doing their jobs properly than they are of getting shot on duty,” and seems to justify police not doing their jobs in these high crime areas.

I find it funny that these conclusions about respecting officers are just now being drawn, when nine times out of ten, that has been the case all along in Baltimore City. To me, it seems that police are letting the violence run high because they want to make the city’s continued unrest seem like the fault of State Attorney Mosby. It is unfortunate that the police that were involved in the death of man that was in their custody are being held accountable, yet the police union can see this as unfair and ultimately are letting a city burn right before their eyes.

6 Baltimore Officers Charged In Death Of Freddie Gray Seek To Move Trial

RadioOnFire.com - Attorneys for six Baltimore police officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray are asking a judge to move their case out of Baltimore, arguing it will be impossible to select an impartial jury and receive a fair trial. 

The officers face charges ranging from assault to second-degree "depraved-heart" murder. 

Gray's death April 19 prompted a wave of protests that on two occasions gave way to violence. Shortly after charges were filed against the officers, the U.S. Justice Department announced that it would conduct an investigation of the city police department. 

In a lengthy motion filed Wednesday, the defense attorneys argued that a citywide curfew during the unrest created "an insurmountable prejudice." 

Democratic Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake imposed the curfew a day after the second outburst of violence. The officers' attorneys compared Baltimore under curfew to "Baghdad and Kabul in its appearance," and argued that because all city residents were "impacted by the events surrounding the arrest and death of Freddie Gray ... every potential juror would bring their passions and prejudices relating to the events with them to the courtroom." 

The motion also argues that in the wake of Gray's death, the case became conflated with longstanding issues of mistrust toward and dysfunction within the police department. 

A spokeswoman for the state's attorney's office did not return a call Wednesday seeking comment.

Changes of venue are relatively rare, although they have been granted in cases that have garnered intense news media coverage or in which e local officials made statements that could influence potential jurors. For example, in the prosecution of Los Angeles police officers in the 1991 videotaped beating of Rodney King, the trial was moved to a much-less racially diverse suburb. A jury acquitted the officers, triggering riots that left swaths of the city smoldering. 

The Gray motion cites a case moved from Baltimore to Howard County involving the arrests of two African-American residents by officers, some of whom were black and some of whom were white. The population of Howard was 18 percent black, compared with 60 percent in Baltimore. A six-member jury that had one black member rejected a lawsuit against the officers. 

Gray was black, as are three of the officers charged in the case. 

In their arguments for a change of venue, the officers wrote that the riots, looting and arson were seen as "a symbolic extension" of protests prompted by the Gray case, and statements made by public officials regarding the department as a whole "blurred the line between the defendants and the police department ... so that the negative and hostile implications toward the department have become inseparably enmeshed with those against the defendants." 

"The jurors watched on the news (or in person) their community burning, vehicles being smashed and set on fire, riots erupting around the city, businesses being vandalized and looted," the motion reads. "To have jurors - Baltimore city residents - have to make a decision in this case when they observe such a spectacle would be unfair and wholly improper in this case." 

The motion also asserts that promises from Rawlings-Blake and State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby to obtain justice were prejudicial. 

If a Baltimore Circuit Court judge grants the motion, the trial could be moved to another jurisdiction in Maryland. If the judge denies the motion, the officers can opt to proceed with a jury trial in the city or select a bench trial, in which the verdict is determined by a judge.

1 Dead After Apparent Road Rage Shooting On Interstate 295

RadioOnFire.com - D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier says one man is dead after what appears to be a road rage shooting on Interstate 295 during rush hour.

Police say two men were found shot in an SUV along northbound lanes of the Anacostia Freeway in southwest Washington on Thursday morning. Lanier says one man has died and the second man was taken to an area hospital.

Lanier is asking any 911 caller who reported the incident to call back to speak with detectives. She is also asking anyone who saw a confrontation on that stretch of road around 8:45 a.m. Thursday to call police.

Lanier says the highway will be closed for several hours while the shooting is investigated.

Adult Woman & Young Child Shot In The Head In SW Baltimore.

RadioOnFire.com - A 31-year-old woman and a young boy were shot in the head in southwest Baltimore Thursday morning. Police responded to the scene, in the 100 block of Upmanor Road, around 8:19 am Thursday morning.

Police estimate the child was approximately 8-years-old. Both victims were shot in the head and both were pronounced dead on the scene. Homicide Detectives are investigating and asking anyone with information to call 410 396 2100

Maryland Lawmakers Take Up Police Reform After Baltimore Unrest

RadioOnFire.com - (Reuters) - Baltimore rioting over the death of a black man from injuries in police custody is spurring Maryland lawmakers to take action on criminal justice reform after legislation stalled in the statehouse.

Legislators hope that the death of Freddie Gray, 25, can galvanize the Democratic-controlled state Assembly after bids for reforms, especially one that would alter a state law giving police special rights, went nowhere in the last legislative session.

"Unfortunately for Freddie Gray, he becomes symbolic of similar type of issues facing police departments across the nation," said state Senator Catherine Pugh, co-chair of a 20-member bipartisan working group appointed this month to study police issues.

Maryland, one of the most liberal U.S. states, is the latest to grapple with reforms after the death of Gray and those of other unarmed black males at the hands of police in Missouri, New York, Ohio, South Carolina and elsewhere.

"The problem of policing is not just a Baltimore problem, not just a Maryland problem, but it's a nationwide problem," said Pugh, who represents the impoverished neighborhood where Gray lived.

South Carolina recently passed legislation approving body cameras for all police and California's state senate has approved a bill barring prosecutors from convening secret grand juries to investigate claims of police brutality. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, and Ohio's John Kasich, a Republican, have also called for reviews of police use of force.

The protests in Maryland following Gray's death last month increased the sense of urgency for action there, said Pugh, who is also the senate majority leader.

Bob Marley Musical Tries To Help Heal An Uneasy Baltimore

(AP) — Most theater professionals like to say that whatever they're working on is very relevant to what's going on in the real world. That was not possibly more true than in Baltimore this spring.

The city's flagship theater, Center Stage, debuted a musical about reggae icon and civil rights activist Bob Marley during the city's spasm of violence and peaceful protests following the death of Freddie Gray in police custody.

Several preview performances for the musical "Marley" were lost amid protests marching near the theater and the actors had to rush to finish rehearsals early on several evenings to accommodate a city-wide curfew.

There were soldiers, horses and armored vehicles in the streets and helicopters in the air as the cast and crew tried to finish a work that highlighted the life of a singer who demanded social justice and freedom for black people.

A new framing scene was added to the play in which two black men watch footage of the Baltimore protests on a smartphone, making the connection between the two movements clear. On May 2, the cast went out into the streets to give a free concert, including singing "One Love" to try to heal the city.

"When real life is happening around you and you're trying to produce art, you have to submit to real life and have faith," said Kwame Kwei-Armah, Center Stage's artistic director who also wrote and directed the Marley musical.

"I'm not sure in my life that I'll ever feel that connected or ever feel that blessed or ever feel that visceral call that theater is about the here and now."

The musical focuses on the years 1975 to 1978, when Marley survived an attempted assassination in Jamaica and went into exile in London. It's the first time a stage musical has used both Marley's songs and his life story.

28 Shootings, 9 Fatal, Over Memorial Day Weekend In Baltimore

BALTIMORE – It’s been a violent weekend in Baltimore after a surge of shootings–some deadly across the city.

Police say 28 people were shot, 9 of them killed over this weekend, adding to the record-breaking violence.

The shooting didn’t stop on Monday night after a 9-year-old boy and another man were both injured by gun fire in the 2900 block of Arunah Avenue. Police say the child was shot in the leg and another man suffered a graze wound to the head.

New police video of a person of interest in Sunday’s deadly shooting in Druid Heights. It’s one of several active investigations following a Memorial Day weekend riddled with gun violence across Baltimore City.

The Baltimore Sun reports 35 people have been killed so far in May making it the deadliest month in Baltimore since December of 1999. Some say the 3-day surge of violence may be a sign of a police department stretched too thin.

“They’ve gone right from the troubles to this spike,” one resident said.

Since the beginning of the year, 108 people have died due to violence in the city.

Video Spotlights Freddie Gray at Baker and Mount Streets

(THE SUN) On the morning of April 12, Michelle Gross woke up to screaming. Gross, known as "Mom" in West Baltimore's Gilmor Homes area, left her home and saw Freddie Gray — someone she called "son" — being dragged into a police van.

As police drove away with Gray, she gave her phone to a neighbor who wanted to call 911 and report the incident. But soon, Gross and the neighbor were headed to the corner of Mount and Baker streets, where the van had stopped.

There, the neighbor shot cellphone video that provides a close look at Gray and police actions that have been criticized by Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn J. Mosby. That video, combined with the account of Gross and her neighbor, provide the most detailed public account of the van stop — a key moment in Gray's fatal encounter with police.

The video shows Gray halfway out of the van, his stomach flat on the floor and his legs hanging off the back. He does not move as four officers stand over him and place shackles around his ankles.

In her first interview about the incident, Gross, 58, said she was shocked at the turn of events that led to Gray's death from a spinal injury. "I thought his leg was just broke and that he was just going to the police station and we would hear him that afternoon," she said recently, as tears streamed down her cheeks.

Most of the video of Gray was taken of the arrest at Mount and Presbury Streets. Less is known about what happened a block away, when the van stopped at Baker Street and he was shackled.

That was a key moment, according to Mosby. Charging documents filed against six officers involved in Gray's arrest and transport state: "Following transport from Baker Street, Mr. Gray suffered a severe and critical neck injury as a result of being handcuffed, shackled by his feet and unrestrained inside of the [Baltimore Police Department] wagon."


According to Mosby, Lt. Brian Rice directed the police van to stop at Mount and Baker.

Police said Gray was acting "irate." Rice and two other officers took him out of the van and placed flex-cuffs on his wrists and metal shackles on his ankles.

Cellphone video and surveillance footage reviewed by The Baltimore Sun shed more light on what took place during the stop.

Video from city surveillance camera No. 2108, mounted on top of Gilmore House, recorded part of the scene. That was one of 16 surveillance videos relating to the arrest and van trip that the Baltimore Police Department released in April.

Maryland Chooses Jail Over Schools for Baltimore Youths

RadioOnFire.com - Two days after Maryland officials approved spending $30 million of taxpayer funds on a shiny new jail for Baltimore youth caught in the snare of the criminal justice system, Gov. Larry Hogan removed $11.6 million from the city’s school budget and reallocated it to the pension fund for state employees, The Baltimore Sun reported.


The budget decisions reflect a pattern in Maryland and across the U.S. of prioritizing spending on incarceration over education—calling to mind what’s become known as the “school-to-prison pipeline”—and the elderly over the young.

On the heels of violent unrest in Baltimore following the death of Freddie Gray in police custody, which focused attention on the city’s racial and economic inequities, Hogan’s choice to defund education has garnered criticism.

“Given how the needs of our children have been highlighted by the events of the past few weeks, I hoped that the governor would have agreed with the general assembly that these dollars are critical for expanded educational opportunities,” Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said at a news conference following Hogan’s announcement.

American Pharoah Wins Preakness In Downpour

MD. Gov. Larry Hogan To Sign Bills On Policing, Community Relations

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan is signing measures aimed at improving policing and community relations, but advocates for greater police accountability say lawmakers missed opportunities to do more.

The bills Hogan is signing Tuesday were approved before the death of Freddie Gray last month in Baltimore police custody.

One measure directs a commission to develop a policy for body cameras. Another requires authorities to report information about deaths in police custody to the governor’s office.

But a variety of bills on police accountability did not pass. Sara Love, the public policy director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland, says advocates are disappointed lawmakers mostly avoided tough challenges.

After Gray’s death and unrest in Baltimore, lawmakers announced that a panel will study the issues and make recommendations for next year.

Ed Reed Retires After 12 Seasons In The NFL

Developer Pledges To Help Rebuild West Baltimore, 300 Businesses Damaged In Riots

RadioOnFire.com - A Baltimore developer is planning on investing $15-million dollars to build new stores and a new shopping center in the riot damaged areas of West Baltimore.

Carl Verstandig, president of America's  Realty, LLC,  which owns a number of shopping centers in Baltimore City says he has purchased about a dozen properties whose owners sold after they were damaged in the riots.

Verstandig says he has received calls from all over the country for interested partners and tenants.

Verstandig also says a deal has been finalized with Greenwood Properties, to develop a 100- thousand square foot shopping plaza along North Avenue in a vacant building and an adjacent one acre parcel.

Verstandig says the shopping center will feature and international grocery, urgent care center, restaurants and other tenants.

Verstandig offers some tenants discounted, or even free rent to help develop the properties.

Verstandig believes the shopping center project can be completed in a year. Verstandig owns shopping centers in 17 states.  He owns more than 30 properties in Maryland, including the Edmondson Village Shopping Center, and Pimlico Center in Baltimore City.

He also owns more than a dozen former 7-Eleven stores which now operate as independent convenient stores across the city.

The number of Baltimore businesses known to have been damaged by riots and looting last week has reached about 300, state officials said Thursday. 

Stephanie Rawlings-Blake Asks For Civil Rights Probe Into City Police Department

RadioOnFire.com - Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake requested Wednesday that the Department of Justice order a "pattern or practice" civil rights investigation into the city's police department, similar to the probe conducted in Ferguson, Missouri after the shooting death of Michael Brown last summer.

The mayor said such a probe was necessary to achieve the kind of "sustainable and significant reform" of the department that she and the citizens of Baltimore want to see.

"The DOJ has employed these investigations in communities across our nation to reform serious patterns and practices of force, biased policing and other unconstitutional practices by law enforcement," she told reporters at her weekly press conference. "I'm asking the Department of Justice to investigate if our police department has engaged in a pattern or practice of stops, searches or arrests that violate the fourth amendment."

The Justice Department is already investigating whether Freddie Gray's civil rights were violated. But the probe Rawlings-Blake is requesting would be far broader, a full-scale civil rights investigation of the entire police department.

A DOJ spokeswoman confirmed that the department had received the mayor's request.

"The attorney general is actively considering that option in light of what she heard from law enforcement, city officials, and community, faith and youth leaders in Baltimore," Dena Iverson said in a statement.

Rawlings-Blake also said Wednesday that the Baltimore Police Department will get body cameras by the end of the year.

Police: Officers Arrest Man With Gun In West Baltimore (Penn/North)

RadioOnFire.com - BALTIMORE —Baltimore police have arrested a man who they said had a gun in west Baltimore at the scene where last week's unrest took place.


City police said officers arrested a man with a gun Monday afternoon at North and Pennsylvania avenues. There was no shooting, police said.

The area remains the center of attention as a result of the destruction a week ago. So when this incident took place Monday afternoon, rumors flew, tempers flared and police in riot gear moved in.

Eventually, Baltimore police Cmdr. Melvin Russell, a familiar face in the community, said a gun did discharge but it was not a gun that belonged to police. No one was shot.

"An adult black male was picked up on cameras and he was clearly armed with a handgun. Police came in. (There was a) very short, brief foot pursuit. He attempted to pull it out, there was a sound of a discharge, sound of a weapon discharging. The police never discharged any weapons. We checked him out, we finally stopped him, we got the weapon, it is a revolver, there are three cartridges and one of them was spent, meaning it has been fired. They had a medic that arrived, he did not want to go with the medic, he was checked out thoroughly by the medic and he has no injuries on his body whatsoever. He is not shot. He did not want to go with the (ambulance) but they took him anyway. We have the weapon, he's with the medic crew and our officers right now," Russell said.

Heavy Police Presence At Penn & North Avenues In Baltimore

Morgan Freeman Speaks Out About The Baltimore Riots

The A-list actor Morgan Freeman, had a lot to say about the Baltimore riots from the death of Freddie Gray. Freeman actually agreed with the protesting.

“Now, they’re getting more of the whole picture”

stated Freeman.

Don’t get Freeman wrong he does not agree with the harsh rioting and fighting with the police. But he did say it’s better than the actions taken prior from similar stories of police killing African American males.

In an interview with U.K ’s Daily Best he stated:

“Baltimore seems to be coming up with a different scenario in the background.
People are saying, ‘You were not all there when we were just talking and trying to make a point, but if we set something on fire, all of sudden you’re all here. ‘Why is that? What’s the difference? And some young reporters are listening. That sort of observation is very useful.”

“Police have a standard reaction to shooting somebody. ‘I fear for my life, I fear for my safety,’

Freeman added.

Gray’s Death Ruled A Homicide; 6 Officer’s Charged, Arrest Warrant Issued

Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby says there are other counts like manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter, second-degree assault. All six officers involved with this arrest will faces these charges later today in court. The arrest of Gray was determined to be a false arrest since the knife he was carrying was legal.

The Driver, Officer Caesar Goodson Jr., 45, will be charged with the most as Freddie’s death was determined by the ME to have happened when he hit his head on a bolt in the van. Procedure was not followed, Freddie was not strapped in and allowed to bump all through the back of the van.

Officer William Porter, 25, was charged with involuntary manslaughter, second-degree assault and misconduct in office.

Lt. Brian Rice, 41, was charged with involuntary manslaughter, second-degree assault and misconduct in office.

Sgt. Alicia White, 30, was charged with involuntary manslaughter, second-degree assault and misconduct in office.

Officer Edward Nero, 29, was charged with second-degree assault and misconduct in office.

Officer Garrett Miller, 26, was charged with second-degree assault, misconduct in office and false imprisonment.

The prosecutor says the investigation started on April 13th, before the riots, but was “comprehensive, thorough and independent”.

The FOP(Fraternal Order Of Police) in Baltimore feel like Mosby should get an independent prosecutor citing a couple instances of why she may not be right for this case;


“While I have the utmost respect for you and your office, I have very deep concerns about the many conflicts of interest presented by your office conducting an investigation in this case,”

“Most importantly, it is clear that your husband’s political future will be directly impacted, for better or worse, by the outcome of your investigation,” the letter states. “In order to avoid any appearance of impropriety or a violation of the Professional Rules of Professional Responsibilty, I ask that you appoint a Special Prosecutor to determine whether or not any charges should be filed.”
