Girl Falls From Catwalk At School Auditorium Onto Another Girl; Both Injured

RadioOnFire.com - A girl fell from a catwalk at a school auditorium onto another girl, injuring both of them, Anne Arundel County fire officials said.

Officials said firefighters and paramedics were called around 3:15 p.m. Thursday after a 12-year-old girl fell from a catwalk through a drop ceiling in the auditorium at Lindale Middle School in Linthicum. Fire officials said the girl fell onto another 12-year-old girl.

The two seventh grade girls were at a drama club rehearsal for a play.

"A student got up on the catwalk where she shouldn't have been. She fell through a ceiling tile that's adjacent to the catwalk, fell on top of another student. The fall was about 35 feet," said Bob Mosier, chief communications officer for Anne Arundel County Public Schools.

The girl who fell was flown to Johns Hopkins Children's Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The other girl was taken by ambulance to Johns Hopkins Children's Center with possible serious injuries.

"(The girl who fell) was seriously injured. The girl she fell on, not quite as seriously injured," Mosier said.

Mosier said catwalks are rarely found in auditoriums in the district's middle schools.

"This is a former high school that we have converted into a middle school. So our middle school auditoriums don't typically have catwalks in them, so this is a bit of a unique situation. Again, students are not permitted on the catwalk. Somehow she got up there. We're looking into exactly what the chain of events was that led to that," Mosier said.

As the investigation into what led to the fall gets underway, district officials said their primary focus is supporting the injured students and their families.

"We will have resources here, counseling resources for students who witnessed this tomorrow morning, so we can help any students who might need it," Mosier said.
