RadioOnFire.com - An off-duty Miami police officer earning extra money working security for an area Walmart was shot multiple times before returning fire and killing a suspected shoplifter Wednesday. The unnamed officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital.
"To be quite honest and quite frank, what occurred today is that the officer that is laying in that bed behind us today was born again because at close range he was able to survive multiple gunshot wounds," Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez said at a news conference outside the hospital. "Right now he's in great spirits despite being shot multiple times."
Police Benevolent Association President John Rivera hailed the officer as a hero."The officer returned fire and actually saved his life and the lives of other people," Rivera told NBC. "This is just another example of how dangerous being a police officer these days are."
The officer was in uniform working an off-duty detail providing security at the Walmart when he confronted the shoplifting suspect in the parking lot. Despite being crowded with shoppers, no one else was injured during the shooting. Miami-Dade officers routinely work off-duty security details during the holiday season for extra money.
