Van Hollen, a Montgomery County Democrat, succeeds the retiring Sen. Barbara Mikulski.
He was a favorite in polling over Republican Kathy Szeliga and Green Margaret Flowers.
Separately, ABC Radio News called Democrat Hillary Clinton the winner of Maryland's 10 electoral votes.
