RadioOnFire.com - A rabid gunman was cut down by police, following a rampage that left one dead and another in critical condition, after he wounded a Philadelphia police sergeant, four civilians, and a University of Pennsylvania security guard on Friday night, [September 16].
The violence reportedly broke out at around 11:19 p.m. when the 19-year veteran, Sgt. Sylvia Young was ambushed while sitting in a marked police cruiser at 52nd and Sansom Street in West Philadelphia. After being struck in the left arm and protective vest while attempting to lean over and dodge a hail of 15 shots, assisting officers arrived and chased the suspect east. One block over, he intruded into a bar, shooting it's bouncer before grabbing a female patron and holding her before him as a "human shield," said Police Commissioner Richard Ross. The chain of events continued from there, with him shooting the women in the leg, then fleeing once again. Upon arriving at 49th and Sansom, he fired multiple shots at a car, striking an unsuspecting couple. Both were hit in the chest, with the woman later pronounced dead at the hospital, and the man remaining in critical condition. Finally, the suspect was cornered in an alley on 48th and Sansom, where he was gunned down, but not before wounding one of two U of Penn officers who had come to the pair of Philadelphia police officers' assistance.
"We believe this is isolated to this individual," Ross said while hosting a press conference outside of Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where the wounded officers are being treated. Ross claims that authorities have recovered a "rambling" letter, believed to be written by the gunman, which espouses hatred for police and probation officers.
