RadioOnFire.com - TV One commentator Roland Martin held nothing back during Thursday's [September 15] episode of his NewsOne Now morning news program; responding to criticism Fox News host Bill O'Reilly had for Colin Kaepernick, with a thorough run-down on the patriotic history of African-American resistance to racial oppression, while working in the service of the nation's flag.
O'Reilly blasted Kaepernick earlier this week, accusing him of stirring hostility towards his own country, and calling his actions deplorable. "Millions of Americans have given their lives for the cause of freedom. Freedom for Blacks in the civil war, freedom for everybody in the revolutionary war, freedom for Asians and freedom for Europe in WWII and WWI," O'Reilly said, before requesting that the 49ers quarterback consider reading his book "Killing The Rising Sun," for perspective that he offered might help Colin gain the same appreciation for patriotism, he has. Martin got wind of the O'Reilly Factor segment, and brought it to the fore on his own show, as he gave context to the centuries of systemic racism, that his posed, his Fox counterpart's quote misrepresents.
"The real patriotism is when you are Black in America, and you've fought for a nation even though that nation did not fight for you. That's real patriotism. So imagine those African-Americans who fought in the Civil War, knowing full well they were not fully free. Imagine the African-Americans who fought in WWI and WWII and in the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, knowing full well that America was not willing to see them as free. That's actual history. So Bill O'Reilly, damn your book! Colin Kaepernick should not read your book, because your book is a joke when it comes to patriotism," Martin said, after fact checking each one of O'Reilly's assertions. The NewsOne Now host then went on to list a dozen titles by authors who have penned biographies on each U.S. military conflict, from the historical perspective of African-Americans who experienced them.
"So Colin Kaepernick, if he sends you his book, throw it in the trash and then send him an Amazon gift card to go buy some other books, so he can learn what it's like to be Black in America," Martin would conclude.
