RadioOnFire.com - Police shot and wounded a man after they say he drew a gun on officers during a traffic stop in Ocean County.
Toms River police say officers approached a suspicious vehicle near the corner of Cedar Drive and Haines Drive shortly before midnight Thursday, according to a release from the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.
Timothy Sauers, 29, of Toms River then exited the vehicle and pointed a handgun at the officers, the release said.
Police say the man sustained at least one gunshot wound before he ran off toward the Toms River. He then hopped over a cement bulkhead and jumped into the river.
Sauers was found about an hour later and taken to a hospital. According to a release from the Toms River Police Department, a New Jersey State Police helicopter assisted in the search.
Authorities expect him to survive. No officers were injured.
Sauers has been charged with weapons offenses, according to a criminal complaint. His bail has been set at $500,000 cash only.
The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office is leading the investigation with assistance from the Ocean County Sheriff's Department CSI unit and the full cooperation of the Toms River Police Department.
Authorities say the incident is not related to the shootings in Dallas, Texas, where a sniper killed five police officers last night.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. John Murphy of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office at (732) 929-2027 x2422.
