Winter Weather Advisory For Sections Of Maryland

RadioOnFire.com - Snowfall will be followed by frigid temperatures this week in Maryland. A winter weather advisory has been issued for central Maryland from D.C. to Baltimore.

Some light snow should begin to fall in the northern suburbs Tuesday morning, while there will be a mix of rain and snow in the Baltimore area, and Anne Arundel County and the Eastern Shore will be experiencing more rain.

Colder air starts to flow into Maryland into the late afternoon and push east, which will start to cause some snow accumulation. A coating of snow for the region should start to come after sunset and should taper off around midnight.

The Baltimore Metro can expect a 1 to 3 inches of snow coverage. Northern and western suburbs could see as much as 3 to 4 inches of snow.

Drivers should expect roads to remain slick Wednesday morning.

"I imagine this is going to be a full-staff storm. Even though it's not going to produce a lot of accumulating snow, it's that ice behind it that we have to really make sure we have all hands on deck and make sure we're treating this for the safety of our public," State Highway Administration spokesman Charlie Gischlar said.

Thursday morning, temperatures will drop dramatically, with wind chills in the negatives. The Baltimore Metro area may feel to be around -3 to -5 degrees, with some northern suburbs feeling as cold as -10 degrees.

SHA crews started pre-treating roads Monday with the usual salt-brine mixture. Crews will plow as needed during the storm before switching treatments once the single-degree temperatures arrive.

"It's very likely we're going to have to add a magnesium fluoride mixture into the salt to get its effectiveness down to zero, where we needs it to be, making sure the elevated roadways bridges overpasses and ramps don't freeze up on people," Gischlar said.

SHA said anyone who can stay inside to do so, which will help crews get the roads clear and safe again.
