Baltimore Police Cancel Leave, Deploy Officers To High-Crime Areas After A Spike In Violence

RadioOnFire.com - Following a bloody week, Baltimore police are canceling leave and strategically sending extra officers to certain locations.

"We have made some significant changes to how we deploy the next couple of days," Interim Commissioner Gary Tuggle said.

Hundreds of officers, detectives, sergeants and lieutenants will be out in parts of the city with high historical crime rates and areas they believe are prone to potential acts of retribution. Every district will see increased presence, Tuggle said.

In September, 37 people were killed in Baltimore, 17 just last week. Already, two have been shot and killed in October. Tuggle, surrounded by top commanders, said he believes a number of those shootings were targeted. He said police are leveraging federal resources to help determine what shootings may be connected.

"It's important to underscore that you can't control human behavior," Tuggle said. "It's our job to look at the data and try to get ahead of those actions."
