RadioOnFire.com - Lyor Cohen has been actively involved in hip-hop at various record labels for more than 30 years. He started by managing rappers for Rush Productions, then led Def Jam. After Def Jam, Cohen took on a leadership role at Warner Music Group. In September 2012, Cohen put in his resignation at Warner and started his own independent label, 300 Entertainment. On September 28, 2016, Cohen was named YouTube's Global Head of Music.
The legendary executive sat down with the Breakfast Club fir an hour long convo. He talked about his start in hip hop concert promotions record companies and much more. Check out the interesting interview below.
He talks about having a handshake deal with Drake to sign to Def Jam only to find out later at an award show the Canadian went with Cash Money Records.
Cohen said the Youtube conglomerate has 1.9 billion customers. He discouraged artist to sign to labels unless they have something to give you. Cohen is not without his critics, some label him a #culturevulture Most notably, Dame Dash, however Cohen claimed he did not know Dash? Clearly a lie.
After this interview, Lyor Cohen will continue to be a controversial figure. He dodged the question about being responsible for the break-up of Roc-a Fella Records refering it back to the label. He did offer an interesting analogy saying if his intervening in Roc-a-Fella caused a break -up, then Jay, Dame, Biggs and TaTa were not really friends. Controversial indeed.
