Lexington Market Closes After Rat Filmed Crawling Over Pastries

RadioOnFire.com - A rat made its way through a bakery at Baltimore's Lexington Market. It has been shut down while workers clean up the area. The health department is investigating.

Cellphone video captured Thursday by Milton Mitchell showed the rat inside one of the display stands. The general manager said a worker may have left the door open.

A spokesperson from Lexington Market said this is an unfortunate situation and that a pest control company services the entire market twice per week. The cleaning service came out for the incident. Later Friday morning, market management decided to close the market at 11:30 a.m.

The Health Department was also there and will be back Friday to determine if Buttercup Bakery Stand can reopen. Mike Mastr, the general manager, said he tried to catch the rat, but the damage had already been done.

"I saw it with the corner of my eyes. By the time I tried to get rid of it, (it) jumped inside the case. As soon as it jumped inside the case, we threw everything out," Mastr said.

"We just want our customers to know that we're doing everything that we can. Unfortunately it happened to us. It could have been any stall, but it's no excuse. It happened," said worker Crystal Adolph.

There are more than 20 doors that lead into the market. Several are located at the loading dock.

The owners said they want to keep the health of their customers first, and hope this does not affect future business.
