Former Cop Named as 'Golden State Killer' with 12 Killings and 50 Rapes

RadioOnFire.com - After an investigation that lasted four decades, Sacremento authorities have finally arrested the fabled "Golden State Killer." The serial killer/rapist was suspected of at least 12 killings and 50 rapes in over 10 counties in California throughout the 70's and 80's. Using key DNA evidence, authorities were able to discern that former Auburn, California police officer Joseph James DeAngelo was the "Golden State Killer." DeAngelo is now 72 years old. At the time of the murders and rapes, DeAngelo had gained the moniker of the "East Area Rapist" and "the Original Night Stalker."

Sacramento District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert spoke at a press conference regarding the arrest on Wednesday, stating, "We all knew that we were looking for a needle in a haystack."It is fitting that today is National DNA Day. We found the needle in the haystack and it was right here in Sacramento."

DeAngelo is facing capital murder charges for the killings of Katie and Brian Maggiore in 1978, which also connect to several other crimes he has committed. He was arrested without incident, and authorities caught him by surprise as he was leaving his home. Investigators are attempting to discern if DeAngelo committed the crimes while on-duty as a police officer.
