Kyrie Irving to Miss 3-6 Weeks After Undergoing Knee Surgery

RadioOnFire.com - The Boston Celtics announced that All-star point guard Kyrie Irving underwent a "minimally invasive" procedure to remove a tension wire in his left knee on Saturday. He is expected to return to basketball activities in three to six weeks.

The Celtics released an official statement on the procedure late Saturday afternoon. Celtics guard Kyrie Irving today underwent a minimally-invasive procedure to remove a tension wire in his left knee.

The wire was initially placed as part of the surgical repair of a fractured patella sustained during the 2015 NBA Finals.

While removal of the wire should relieve irritation it was causing in Irving’s patellar tendon, the fractured patella has fully healed, and Irving’s knee has been found to be completely structurally sound. Irving is expected to return to basketball activities in 3-6 weeks.

After missing five consecutive games due to knee soreness, the 26-year-old sought out a second opinion before ultimately opting for surgery. The regular season wraps up April 11th, with the playoffs starting soon after. With a three to six-week injury timeline, Irving's availability for the beginning of the playoffs is in jeopardy.

The five-time all-star averaging 24.4 points per game in 2018, is likely to be ready to go in time for the second round of the playoffs.
