Baltimore County Schools Step Closer To Getting Digital Devices, Laptops

RadioOnFire.com - Baltimore County school officials are a step closer to signing a contract to put computers and digital devices into the hands of students and teachers.

It's a contract that's still getting pushback from some school board members, however.

The vote will happen Tuesday night for a second time after it was put on hold a few weeks ago. It's a $140 million contract, designed to keep technology in the classroom.

Lyons Mill Elementary School is one school in which teachers are using technology in classrooms to increase learning and boost test scores. for example, students in one of its second-grade classrooms use laptops as a part of their daily assignments.

County School Board President Ed Gilliss, who supports a new technology deal, said that as far as he can tell, the digital device program is getting good marks.

"The contact that I have had has been from parents, teachers and students saying that this is the 21st century and they want digital devices," Gillis said.

However, there's a difference of opinion among some school board members who are already concerned with how the district has been awarding contracts.

Board member Anne Miller said, "My analysis of the information BCPS provided is that the current contract has been grossly overspent and the stat program is unsustainable."

The new computer contract would put the portable devices into the hands of more than 133,000 students and teachers as part of a lease-refresh program.

"I have teachers who love them and absolutely want them. I have teachers who don't want them, and I have teachers who are kind of up in the air," said Abby Beytin, president of the Teachers Association of Baltimore County.

Officials hope they can reach an agreement before the summer.
