Army Veteran Who Served Two Tours in Afghanistan Deported to Mexico

RadioOnFire.com - US Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed on Friday, March 23, that an undocumented veteran who served two tours of duty in Afghanistan before being jailed on a drug conviction, has been deported.

Miguel Perez Jr. is the father of two children who are U.S. citizens by birth and the son of parents who are at this point already naturalized citizens. Even one of his siblings has her papers, but the 39-year-old Perez never acquired citizenship despite having been raised in Chicago since age 11 and eventually following through with military service to the country.

His case is a controversial one that has received the support of Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth, who issued a statement calling his deportation a "deplorable way to treat a veteran who risked his life in combat for our nation." ICE reports that Perez was escorted past the border and handed over to Mexican authorities, but according to how his attorney, Chris Bergen tells it, the long-time legal resident was "dumped in one of the most dangerous areas" of the region.

Perez has been behind bars since 2010 when he was sentenced to 15 years for manufacturing or delivering more than two pounds of cocaine. While his defenders do not dispute the penal repercussions of Perez's criminality, they argue against the government going the lengths to evict him from the country he has known as his for nearly three decades. Perez's family contends that after his service in the Middle East he suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and fell into drug use while struggling to readapt to society.
