RadioOnFire.com - Black History Month is here. Originally, Black History Month was a week-long celebration in February. The celebration was set during the second week of the month, in honor of Federick Douglas' birthday. African American students at Kent University helped propose the extension of the week, and in 1970, Black History Month was born.
The Black Lives Matter movement has been viewed as controversial by many Americans, although the leading activists within the group promote peaceful means of protesting. The black-and-white logo of the movement has been placed on bumper stickers, posters, and advertisements. On Thursday morning, the logo was placed somewhere it has never been though, on a high school flagpole.

At Montpelier High School in Vermont, where there are only 18 Black students, a ceremony was held Thursday morning where the Black Lives Matter logo was imprinted on a flag and raised alongside the American flag. Students, faculty members, and town residents all attended the ceremony. Students took turns raising the flag, which will remain at Half-mast for the entire month of February.
There were no protesters at the event, although police were assigned to the ceremony due to threats. In 2016, a flying Black Lives Matter flag was stolen from University of Vermont.
