RadioOnFire.com - A 39-year-old woman was indicted earlier this week, for incaging two of her children in their Virginia home, and keeping the others in decaying conditions.
Malista Ness-Hopkins of Mears, VA was charged five counts of child abuse and neglect on Monday, October 2. The charges stem from investigators following up on a social services worker's claim that she found Ness-Hopkins' two and three-year-olds trapped in cribs with lids screwed over them. According to the social worker, Kate Bonniwell's testimony, the stay-at-home mother struggled to open the crib tops for 23 minutes, despite her use of an electric screwdriver.
In addition to the caged toddlers, there was a third child, of two years, who like the other two, was found in a soiled diaper. There were also two older children, ages five and six, whose mattresses were said to be filthy and bare. The entire home was a wreck according to Bonniwell, with garbage scattered around the home and a cockroach infestation. Most disturbing, however, was the condition of the caged babies, who were reported to have hissed and grunted animal noises as Bonniwell observed Ness-Hopkins prying the crib top loose.
Ness-Hopkins has been ordered to get a mental health evaluation. She remains free on bond as she awaits her trial.
