Titans Explain Why They Passed on Signing Colin Kaepernick

RadioOnFire.com - Colin Kaepernick is still unemployed. After Titans' Marcus Mariota injured his hamstring, it seemed obvious that Kaepernick would be a clear choice, but the controversial quarterback wasn't even brought in for a workout. Kaepernick and Mariota have a similar skillset, and Kaepernick is the best available QB based on the numbers, but the Tennessee Titans decided to go a different route.

They decided to sign Brandon Weeden after working out four quarterbacks, including Matt Barkley, Matt McGloin, and T.J. Yates. The decision sent the internet into a frenzy and reinforced the belief of many that Kaepernick is being blackballed by the league after he decided to kneel during the national anthem to protest racism, oppression, and police brutality against black people.

During his press conference on Wednesday, Titans coach Mike Mularkey was asked if his team had shown any interest in signing Kaepernick, but it appears they didn't even consider the possibility.

"I'm not aware if there was [any interest in Kaepernick]," Mularkey said, via ESPN.com.

"I know he's not familiar with our offense," Mularkey said of Kaepernick. "I know T.J. Yates had some experience with it in Atlanta and with us for a couple of weeks."

"As quickly as we could get somebody up to speed in a short amount of time, he had the advantage over everybody," Mularkey said speaking of Weeden.

A similar excuse was used for the Miami Dolphins following Ryan Tannehill's injury. Coach Adam Gase went with Jay Cutler because the two spent a year together in Chicago while Gase was the offense coordinator for the Bears. So far, that decision has not paid off with the team getting off to a 1-2 start.

The Dolphins will face off against the Titans on Sunday. If Mariota is unable to play, then the Titans will go with Matt Cassel as their starter and Weeden as their backup.

As for the argument that Kaepernick may not be in football shape, Tennessee wide receiver Rishard Matthews dispels that notion.

"I know for a fact he's ready to go," Matthews said.

Matthews went to college with Kaepernick and said on Wednesday that he's spoken to his former college teammate as recently as last week.
