Speed Camera Tickets Start Today; Red Light Cameras Go Online

RadioOnFire.com - In Baltimore City, motorists can expect red light cameras to go online on today.
Also today, the city’s speed cameras which have been issuing warnings for the last month, will begin snapping pictures and issuing $40 tickets for violators.
At a news conference last week, City Transportation Director Michelle Porciau told reporters today at City Hall that these cameras are not about making money for the city, but about safety.
“We want this to be a safe place. We want complete streets for everyone, pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists, and so here’s another part of the program,” Porciau said at the news conference with Mayor Catherine Pugh.
“We are experiencing over 20,000 crashes per year in Baltimore, so this is no joke.”
There are eight red light cameras around the city that will begin issuing warnings for violators for 30 days, before beginning to issue tickets.
The cameras will operate 24-hours-a-day, seven days a week. Violators caught driving through red lights will be fined $75.
Speed cameras have been in place at seven different locations since June 26th.
Porciau says cameras issued 1,000 warnings per day over the last month.
Starting today, violators caught on camera going 12 mph or more above the speed limit between 6:00 A.M. and 8:00 P.M.  Monday through Friday, will get a fine of $40.
This is the city’s third attempt at speed cameras.  In 2013, the city abandoned its program after cameras were found to be issuing tickets to drivers whose vehicles were not moving.
Officials say radar and laser technology will be used to insure accuracy of the cameras and the camera operator will not receive a portion of the fine from every ticket issued.
