Lil Yachty - Teenage Emotions (ALBUM REVIEW)

RadioOnFire.com - Something about Lil Yachty makes me want to root for him. I don't know if it is the fact that the 19 year old rapper gets so much hate or the fact that he hails from my second hometown - Atlanta, Georgia. To a large degree, I feel he is an underdog, although some may not agree. He does have the backing of Quality Control Music, Capitol Records and Motown Records. Surely, many rap music underdogs would love the kind of label support Lil Yachty enjoys, but it has come with a price.

With the level of success the 'Summer Song' rapper has seen just releasing an EP & mixtapes you would think he would be more celebrated. Lil Yachty was infamously called the 'poster child for wack rappers' and "Teenage Emotions" was his chance to prove naysayers wrong.

If nothing, Lil Yachty "Teenage Emotions" album cover is brave. Showcasing two apparently gay white males' kissing, a very overweight white girl, a punk rock girl, a girl with vitiligo, an albino, some black hip hoppers and more all sitting in a movie theater among Lil Yachty, it comes off as more of a show of acceptance than a coming out party.

While the catchy 1980's feel of "Bring It Back" and Diplo produced "Forever Young" has crossover appeal; Yachty has songs like the Migos assisted "Peek A Boo" will have ratched strip clubs across the country lit. He comes off like he has something to prove and addresses haters and imitators often. Not many people will confuse "Momma" (Outro) ft. Sonyae Elise with a timeless classic.

Songs like "Made of Glass" and "DN Freestyle" are some of the worst songs I have heard in recent memory. He is especially bad when he tries to do the 'Soulja Boy' flow.

There are other standout cuts like the reggae influenced "Better" ft. Stefflon Don & "All Around Me" ft. YG and Kamaiyah. While his actual rap skill is limited - he knows how to make fun music (with the right production); and that is what hip-hop is all about. Lil Yachty is all fun - no substance.
