WBAL-TV 11 reports that the two Baltimore City School Police officers seen in a now-viral video which shows one of them hitting a student are out of jail on bond after being arrested and charged overnight Wednesday.
Anthony Spence, 44, the officer seen hitting the student at REACH Partnership School, faces three charges: second-degree child abuse, which is a felony, along with second-degree assault and misconduct in office. The latter two charges are misdemeanors.
The other officer in the video, 53-year-old Saverna Bias, is charged with second-degree assault and misconduct in office.
Baltimore Police Department spokesman T.J. Smith said the charges came after the department's Special Investigation Response Team investigated the incident at the request of acting schools police Chief Akil Hamm.
City police then consulted with the Baltimore City State's Attorney's Office before charges were prepared and filed with the commissioner Tuesday evening, Smith said.
Smith said city school police will continue to handle the internal investigation into the incident and the criminal case is now in the hands of the Public Integrity Unit of the State's Attorney's Office.
Both officers are due in court for their first appearance in April.
