Winter Weather Advisory For Sections Of Maryland

RadioOnFire.com - The National Weather Service says that light snow is likely for the evening commute for the Baltimore and Washington metropolitan areas while also issuing a Winter Weather Advisory for Carroll, Northern Baltimore, Northwest Howard and Northwest Harford Counties.

Thursday will start off dry, but by the afternoon and evening, snow showers will break out and continue after sunset and into the evening.

Tony Pann's Weather Talk Blog: Three chances of snow coming

This is a fairly weak system, but some accumulating snow is likely. It should begin Thursday evening as a pure light snow across the Baltimore metro. By just after midnight, some warmer air will work in and change it to light rain south and east of Interstate 95. In Baltimore's typically colder northern suburbs, the forecast calls for 1 to 2 inches of snow.

Then more wintry weather is in the forecast over the weekend. It should start as a mix of rain, snow and ice late Saturday. If there is going to be a good snow accumulation around Baltimore, it would likely be Saturday night.

There could also be a period of freezing rain or sleet producing an ice accumulation in some areas as well. Temps will climb into the 40s by Sunday morning, and it should all change to rain for a while ...

But the rain will change back to snow before it all ends Sunday evening, and it's going to get sharply colder! Temperatures could be in the single-digits by Monday morning.

From the National Weather Service:

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO 4 AM EST FRIDAY...

* WHAT...Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of around one inch expected.

* WHERE...Carroll, Northern Baltimore, Northwest Howard and Northwest Harford Counties.

* WHEN...From 6 PM this evening to 4 AM EST Friday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Plan on slippery road conditions and sidewalks. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute after sunset as temperatures fall below freezing.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Expect snow covered roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving.

...LIGHT SNOW LIKELY FOR THE EVENING COMMUTE FOR THE BALTIMORE AND WASHINGTON METROPOLITAN AREAS...

Snow will develop late this afternoon into this evening and continue into the overnight hours. While accumulations are forecast to be light, around an inch, any untreated road surfaces and sidewalks may turn icy as temperatures fall below freezing after sunset.

The greatest threat for impact from this light snowfall during evening rush hour will be north and west of Interstate 95 from Baltimore to Fredericksburg and also near Interstate 66 in northern Virginia.

If you plan on commuting this evening, be aware of the potential for travel disruptions. Plan ahead by allowing for extra travel time, and consider using public transportation and telework options.

Stay tuned for future updates on this winter weather event, and the potential for Winter Weather Advisories to be issued later this morning.
