The Second Year Of Light City In Baltimore Started Today

RadioOnFire.com - Light City Baltimore starts on Friday.
For those who didn't get to see Light City Baltimore last year, you have more opportunities this time around. The festival is longer this year -- one of many changes spectators can expect to find.
This year, the festival will run nightly from  7:00 P.M. to 11:00 P.M. through April 8th and it will remain open until midnight on Friday and Saturday.
“We've upped our technical game and scaled up our installations here at the harbor,” Kathleen Hornig, festivals director for the Baltimore Office of Promotions and the Arts, said. “Most of them are completely new to the festival. We only have two repeats.”
Even though artists from the around world participate, organizers wanted to keep the Charm City in Light City.
For its second year, organizers wanted bigger, bolder and brighter exhibits. Organizers said that is the event’s unofficial motto.
Last year, Light City welcomed more than 400,000 people over seven nights.

Sean Spicer Tells Black Correspondent April Ryan to Stop Shaking Her Head

RadioOnFire.com - Sean Spicer has gotten media attention throughout his short stint as White House press secretary, and on Tuesday (March 28), things seemed to have flared up to an all-time high during an exchange with longtime White House correspondent and Washington bureau chief for American Urban Radio Networks, April Ryan.
Ryan, who has been sitting in on press briefings since the early 90s, asked Spicer about the recent rocky months for the Trump administration. She stated, “Two and a half months in, you’ve got this [Sally] Yates story today, you’ve got other things going on, you’ve got Russia, you’ve got wiretapping,” before being cut off by Spicer, who interjected and said, “No, we don’t have that.”
Spicer denied a connection between Trump and Russia, and told Ryan, “I’m sorry that that disgusts you. You’re shaking your head. I appreciate it.”
Things got even more heated after Ryan asked about Trump's recent meeting with former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice, someone who has publicly opposed Trump. Spicer told Ryan, ”It’s interesting that you ask those two questions back to back. On the one hand, you’re saying what are we doing to improve our image? And then here he is once again meeting somebody that hasn’t been a big supporter of his. … It seems like you’re hellbent on trying to make sure that whatever image you want to tell about this White House stays. … I’m sorry, please stop shaking your head again.”

RadioOnFire.com - The State of Michigan has allotted $87 million of federal and state funds to replace thousands of contaminated lead pipes throughout Flint, whose residents have been exposed to lead-tainted water for more than a year.
The proposal, if approved, would settle a lawsuit brought by Flint residents against the city. It would also require the state to provide free bottled water and begin a program of water testing. The deal aims to replace thousands of pipes in and around Flint homes by the year 2020.
A federal judge is expected to review the proposal on Tuesday.

Suge Knight Hospitalized with Life-Threatening Blood Clot

RadioOnFire.com - Former Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight has reportedly been admitted into a hospital to undergo treatment for blood clots that his fiancee says doctors have described as "life threatening."

Knight was checked into Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center on Wednesday, March 22. The clots are only the latest in a series of health crises that have challenged the 50-year-old mogul, sending him in and out of the emergency room over the course of the two year stint he has spent behind bars fighting charges related to the murder of industry peer Terry Carter. Fans will recall Knight facing a medical emergency one year ago this month, when he was forced to undergo surgery on his appendix.

According to Toi-Lin Kelly, who is engaged to Knight, he hasn't been receiving adequate treatment, and she speculates that his health is being purposely neglected. “It has been two years of in and out of the hospital, dealing with the same blood clots because the hospital doesn't want to deal with the pressure of the Sheriff's (jail officials) while he is seeking care,” Kelly told the New York Daily News. Should Knight's health take a turn for the worst, Kelly says she and Knight's attorney's have been preparing to make a case against the prison. “I am not confident they care about his well-being, if at all. I can tell you we are well documenting the actions of the jail and USC Medical so we can stay on top of this," she said.

Veto-Proof Majority Approves Baltimore Minimum Wage Hike

RadioOnFire.com - The Baltimore City Council on Monday voted in a veto-proof majority for a bill that would raise the city's minimum wage to $15 by 2023.
The vote was 11-3. Under the bill there would be gradual increases in the minimum wage starting in 2019. Until then, the city would be tied to the state minimum wage, now $8.75 an hour, but will rise to $9.25 an hour this July, and $10.10 an hour in July 2018. The city minimum wage will then rise to $11.25 the following year, with $1.25 an hour increases until it reaches the $15 level.
Once the minimum wage hits $15, it will be increased by the city Wage Commission based on inflation.
Workers under 21 would be exempt from the higher minimum wage. City Councilmen Leon Pinkett, Yitzy Schleifer and Eric Costello voted against the measure.
Mayor Catherine Pugh hasn't said yet if she'll sign the measure, saying it would affect the city's ability to pay major expenses like federally-mandated police reforms.
"What a minimum wage will do for just my agencies, 800 people, I have to look at this from a total perspective of what's going to be best for Baltimore," Pugh told WBAL last week. "As I look at it right now, Baltimore needs to be in line with the rest of the state, so I'm looking at it."

Milwaukee Jail Under Fire For Forcing Women To Give Birth In Shackles

RadioOnFire.com - Last week, a jail in Milwaukee, WI was slammed with a class action lawsuit charging its personnel with forcing dozens of women to give birth in shackles.
The suit was filed on March 14 on behalf of 27-year-old inmate Melissa Hall, who was pregnant during her incarceration at Milwaukee County Jail in 2013. Hall is said to have been locked in a "belly-chain" described to have bound her wrists to her waist, while her legs were planked with irons, during labor. The suit alleges that the guards responsible for transporting and keeping watch over Hall would refuse to unshackle her despite the insistence of hospital workers.
As a result of Hall's confinement, doctors say it was difficult for them to give her an epidural and she was forced to endure more pain. The markings of the shackles are reported to have been left on her body. The prison oversaw the same procedure for at least 40 other inmates, the suit alleges; accusing the facility of inflicting "physical pain and suffering" and imposing "unreasonable risks of harm," to the women it lists.
Despite the Wisconsin Department of Corrections having long abolished shackling of inmates during childbirth, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons ridding a similar mandate in the years since, Milwaukee County Jail has continued to enforce a policy which ensures that all detainees remain shackled while receiving medical treatment, including those carrying a pregnancy. Among the defendants named in the suit is famed Milwaukee County sheriff David Clarke, who oversees the facility. The suit calls Clarke's protocol for chaining women in childbirth "excessive" and “not rationally related to a legitimate, non-punitive purpose.”
It is not the first time that the Milwaukee jail has been taken to court over its handling of child labor among its inmates. Similar lawsuits were filed in 2014 and December of 2016, with one case citing a woman being shackled for the duration of her 21-hour labor and the other respectively citing the death of a newborn alleged to have occurred in part as a result of the labor stress.

FBI Director Refutes Donald Trump’s ‘Wiretap’ Tweets

WASHINGTON ― FBI Director James Comey on Monday directly refuted President Donald Trump’s claim that former President Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower.

Without providing any evidence (and apparently by relying upon media reports), Trump claimed earlier this month that Obama had wiretapped his office at Trump Tower during the 2016 campaign. Appearing before the House Intelligence Committee on Monday, Comey said he had no evidence that could back up the president’s allegations.

“With respect to the president’s tweets about alleged wiretapping directed at him by the prior administration, I have no information that supports those tweets, and we have looked carefully inside the FBI,” Comey said. “The Department of Justice has asked me to share with you that the answer is the same for the Department of Justice and all its components, the department has no information that supports those tweets.”

The House Intelligence Committee is looking into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Comey confirmed on Monday that the bureau is conducting an investigation into Russian interference with the 2016 election and potential ties between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

Irish Prime Minister Schools Trump on Irish Immigration While Standing By His Side

RadioOnFire.com - President Donald Trump hosted the Prime Minister of Ireland as the nation's guest at the White House on St. Patrick's Day, and while reflecting on the significance of the holiday, the Irish PM made a couple of remarks that seemingly endeavored to politicized the occasion.
“It’s fitting that we gather here each year to celebrate St. Patrick and his legacy,” Prime Minister Enda Kenny said. “He, too, was an immigrant. And even though he is, of course, the patron saint of Ireland, for many people around the globe, he is also the symbol of — indeed, the patron of — immigrants.”
As Kenny moved along he further expounded on the role immigrants, particularly Irish immigrants, have played in the development of the U.S. economy, political structure, social and cultural life. Trump stood abreast the Irish PM, giving nothing off by his expression, but the moment quickly spread about the media, with many purporting that Kenny was delivering a statement to the President. Trump's reputation for strictly addressing immigration has, of course, preceded him in the states, but it is becoming clear that there are even those overseas for whom his policies have become a point of contention.

After Trump Said Mexico Would Pay for Wall, Cost Included in Proposed Budget

RadioOnFire.com - President Donald Trump presented his plans for the federal budget on Wednesday, March 15, and among the expenses is the border wall that on the campaign he promised Mexico would pay for.
Under Trump's proposal, $4.1 billion of taxpayer money would go towards the construction of the massive project, with the breakdown splitting the bill so that $1.5 billion of it is covered this year and $2.6 billion of it is spent during the 2018 budget year, starting on October 1.
Based off of recent estimates, it would appear that the $4.1 billion Trump has pledged is marked up for a partial completion of the wall only, with the remainder of the cost being left for a future budget. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the total cost of the project should run in the area of $21.6 billion, over the span of three years. That number is considerably higher than the $12 billion Trump estimated it would take during his campaign.
Trump has admitted that citizens will foot the bill for the project for some months now, stating after his inauguration in January that Americans will have to shoulder the cost, but that he will flip the cost back on to Mexico in some form or fashion, at one point raising the possibility of imposing a 20% tariff on Mexican imports; a move that was ridiculed by some who speculate that it would only lead to Mexico increasing the price of goods, which would ultimately put the cost back on American consumers.

Trump's Budget May Cut Funding to NYPD's Fight Against Terrorism

RadioOnFire.com - It looks as if President Trump does not have the best interest of the police in mind like he previously stated, because according to his proposed federal budget, the NYPD is looking to lose their funding for the fight against terrorism.
Previously, Trump let the nation know that he would be slashing funding to cities that allowed their area to be a sanctuary to illegal immigrants, as well as cities that refuse to arrest or detain immigrants who are not in the U.S. under legal circumstances. Places like Miami have already felt the wrath of Trump's threat.
With that said, New York City's Mayor de Blasio already made it clear that New York would still remain a sanctuary, and that it would potentially cost the city millions of dollars in federal aid. Police Commissioner James O'Neill gave a statement on the proposed budget, saying, "Nearly all federal funding to the NYPD would be eradicated. It is the backbone of our entire counterterrorism apparatus.” Bill de Blasio had some choice words for Trump's budget as well, saying, "Let me be clear: New York City is in the crosshairs of the president's budget. New Yorkers will be hurt by it. President Trump's budget confirms he does not value working families. It contradicts his campaign promises." de Blasio went on to ask President Trump to "come back to New York City and talk to the people hurt by his budget."
A spokesman for the NYPD named Peter Donald tweeted about Trump's budget as well, "This budget as proposed would make #NYC increasingly less safe." The NYPD is not the only one on the chopping block, as the proposed budget is set to take away funding for PBS, NPR, and funding for the Environmental Protection Agency.

Mark Cuban Offers Obama 10% Ownership of Mavericks for $300 Million

RadioOnFire.com - Former President Barack Obama is already set to return from his post-presidency vacation tour to a $60 million book deal with Penguin Random House, and by the looks of it there will be a load of other offers coming his way. One such proposal was made by business mogul Mark Cuban, who is inviting Obama to consider joining him as a part of the Dallas Mavericks ownership group it was announced on Wednesday, March 15.
Cuban is reportedly dangling a deal before the 44th President that would give him 10% of the franchise for a bulky $300 million. By most indications, the asking price would be above Obama's net worth, which in 2016 was valued at $12.2 million. His $400,000 a year presidential salary put him slightly above Michelle Obama, whose wealth was estimated at $11.8 million.
For what it's worth, Obama has expressed interest in purchasing ownership of an NBA team before. Back in January former White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest made mention of Obama having pondered the possibility of pursuing stake upon leaving office, stating that it'd be a go "potentially, if the opportunity arose, under the right circumstances."

Sean Spicer: Trump Didn't Mean Obama Literally Had His Wires Tapped

RadioOnFire.com - Donald Trump stirred up controversy last week after tweeting that Barack Obama had his wires tapped, writing, "Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my "wires tapped" in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!"

Press Secretary Sean Spicer decided to attempt to clear things up in a press conference on Monday (March 13), and he explained, "The president was very clear in his tweet that it was, you know, 'wiretapping,'" which Spicer said while using air quote motions with his hands. "That spans a whole host of surveillance types of options."

The Justice Department requested more time to release a report after it was expected to release information on their investigation on Monday.

Floyd Mayweather Officially Comes Out Of Retirement, Eyes Fight With McGregor

RadioOnFire.com - Floyd Mayweather Jr. extended himself further than he thus far has in approaching a possible fight with UFC star Conor McGregor, when on Saturday, March 11, the 49-0 boxing great announced that he was coming out of retirement solely to pursue the crossover match.
“Everybody get your phone out ... Post this to the internet as soon as possible,” Mayweather told an eager room of onlookers, while sitting through one of the many interviews he's been doing on his UK tour. It was an opportune time for the TMT boss to throw down the gauntlet, as he had after all been only miles away from McGregor's turf. Mayweather began to list off the times he had to travel into another fighter's domain, take less money and play second fiddle as the B-side. It was a reference to McGregor's claim that Floyd is purposefully pricing himself out because he actually doesn't want to fight the Irish brawler.
“For Conor McGregor, I’m coming out of retirement, just to fight Conor McGregor. I don’t want to hear no more excuses about the money, about the UFC. Sign the paper with the UFC so you can fight me in June. Simple and plain, let’s fight in June," said Floyd. "You’re the B-side. I’m the A-side. We’re not here to cry about money. I’m tired of all this crying about money and saying you want to fight. You’re blowing smoke up everyone’s [butt], if you want to fight, sign the paperwork.”

National Weather Service Issues Winter Storm Watch

RadioOnFire.com - A winter that has been fairly quiet so far is about to get very complicated.
WHAT TO KNOW
  • Snow to start falling Monday night into Tuesday morning
  • Heavy snowfall possible, depending on movement of storm
  • Storm system will lift north, east Tuesday night
  • Check back for updates! Forecast is ever-changing
The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch for Monday evening through Tuesday afternoon for much of Maryland, saying there's a potential for 5 or more inches of snow within a 12-hour period.
From the National Weather Service:
The National Weather Service in Baltimore MD/Washington has issued a Winter Storm Watch, which is in effect from Monday evening through Tuesday afternoon.
* Precipitation type...snow.
* Accumulation...potential for 5 or more inches of snow within 12 hours. Some locations may see significantly higher accumulation.
* Timing...snow will overspread the area Monday evening and persist into Tuesday. * Impacts...the heavy snow may make many roads impassable and may produce power outages due to the weight of the snow on tree limbs and power lines.
* Winds...northeast 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.
* Temperatures...in the lower 30s. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Winter Storm Watch means there is a potential for significant snow, sleet, or ice accumulations that may impact travel. Continue to monitor the latest forecasts.
From WBAL-TV 11:
Snow is forecast to fall starting Monday night. The heart of the storm and heavy snow will fall during Tuesday morning's commute, particularly north and west of the Interstate 95 corridor.
WBAL-TV 11 Weather meteorologist Miri Marshall said, while it's very early in the forecasting stages, as much as 4-8 inches or more of snow could fall by Tuesday morning, but it depends on where the rain-snow line will move and when.
There are several different scenarios that show the rain-snow line in different places by early Tuesday morning, which will impact how much snow will fall.
The position of the area of low pressure is important. If the storm tracks farther west, snow will mix in with rain and sleet and that could cut down on the snow totals. But if the storm tracks farther east, drawing more cold air into the area, more snowfall is possible.
The storm is forecast to taper off Tuesday afternoon.

Rep. Cummings Asks Trump To Soften Talk About Black Communities

(WASHINGTON) -- Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Maryland) said Wednesday that he used his meeting at the White House with President Trump on prescription drug prices to also address the president's past rhetoric about black communities.

Speaking to reporters outside the West Wing after his meeting, Cummings -- who is a senior member of the Congressional Black Caucus -- said he told the president that his language about African-American neighborhoods and inner cities had been "hurtful."

"I said I don’t know if anybody has ever said this to you, but most African Americans are doing pretty good," Cummings said. “And when we hear those words about carnage and we're living depressed situations, I told him that it was very hurtful to people.”

In speeches and public comments, Trump has frequently portrayed inner city America and many African-American communities in bleak terms.

In a pitch for black voters on the campaign trail in August, Trump rhetorically asked African-Americans what they “have to lose" by voting for Trump. "You live in your poverty, your schools are no good. You have no jobs. Fifty-eight percent of your youth is unemployed," Trump said at the time.

Cummings, a longtime resident of Baltimore, said he urged the president to acknowledge that not all African-American-majority neighborhoods are “places of depression [and] where people are being harmed.”

The Maryland representative also said he told Trump that he believed voter fraud -- which the president has often raised -- is "all but nonexistent." He said that any "reasonable investigation of voting in the United States" should instead include an acknowledgment of voter suppression.

The president "seemed to get it" on both issues, Cummings said. "Now where he goes from there I don't know, but I could not come out of this meeting without raising those issues."

But the primary reason for Wednesday's meeting was to discuss prescription drug prices, a policy area where Cummings and the president have expressed potential common ground.

Along with Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vermont), Cummings presented Trump and Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price with a proposal that would allow Medicare to better negotiate drug prices.

Cummings said Trump "was clearly aware of the problem and he made it clear to us that he wanted to do something about it."

Chicago Man Beats Murder Case, Gets Killed Minutes After Leaving Jail

RadioOnFire.com - A Cook County man beat a murder case, but was not so fortunate after leaving jail and being murdered literally minutes after his departure.
23-year-old Kamari Belmont was held for robbery and murder charges from 2015 after he allegedly shot one man during a robbery, then robbed another man hours later in the same day. The man that he shot ended up dying a month later.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the prosecutors in Cook County dropped the murder charges at the end of January 2017 after too much time went by in accordance to Illinois' trial statute. However, the robbery charges were kept and Kamari Belmont was held on a $100,000 bond. Shortly after, Belmont was released after a friend posted $10,000 on the bond. Reports noted that after being released, he walked a few blocks away when a white SUV pulled up to his car and began firing from the truck. The truck pulled off and crashed down the street, with the assailants inside fleeing the scene. Belmont died in the middle of the street.
Despite Belmont being murdered so quickly upon his release, his attorney believes that this was not a retaliation for the murder and robberies that happened in 2015.

Couple Goes on FB Live, Snitches on Themselves, Gets Charged with Murder

RadioOnFire.com - According to the Dallas Morning News, Alex was walking through a parking lot when a gunman fired at him in the middle of the street around 2:40 p.m. Thursday. He was taken to Baylor University Medical Center where he died from his injuries.
Police released surveillance video showing the gunman dressed in all black and photos of red 2007 PT Cruiser, which apparently belonged to Coleman, according to her arrest affidavit. Police eventually located the vehicle Friday through witnesses who provided them with locations. The couple also went on Facebook Live showing off a gun and bullets while boasting about shooting someone.
Coleman and Griffin-White denied having any involvement in the killing of Alex with Coleman writing she's "far from a murderer" in a separate Facebook post. She then posted a photo of the couple on Instagram, with her holding a rifle while Griffin-White stood behind her holding a gun. She captioned the photo, "I'm his Bonnie he my Clyde."
Bail has been set at $500,000 for each of them.

9 Arrested, Including 8 Juveniles, In Caught-On-Video Assault

**WARNING: GRAPHIC LANGUAGE IN VIDEO**
RadioOnFire.com - Nine were arrested--including eight juveniles--in a brazen assault and robbery just blocks from Baltimore Police headquarters.
The eight teens--seven of whom are from Baltimore, the eighth of whom is from Baltimore County--were all charged as juveniles. The ninth, 18-year-old Derell Smith, 18, of the 1700 block of Belvedere Avenue, was charged as an adult with robbery and second-degree assault.
Police spokesman T.J. Smith says it's believed Smith was the ringleader of the group, which included one boy as young as 12.
"One of these kids is in elementary school...not that the school has anything to do with it but we're talking about elementary and middle school age kids," Smith said.
He said Commissioner Kevin Davis has spoken with the victim, who was robbed of his cell phone and was treated and released at the scene. He said Davis also plans to visit the city schools where the suspects hailed from and talk to students.
"We can't have things like this happening," Smith said, noting the crime took place outside the Charles Center Metro Subway Station, just a few blocks from police headquarters. "It's one cell phone with a group of people, what are you gonna do with it?"
The assault was caught on video and shared on social media by a witness. Smith noted the umbrage taken by the eyewitnesses, and credited witnesses with helping them positively identify a suspect.

Disgraceful! Ben Carson Refers to Slaves as Immigrants in Speech

But they too had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great-grandsons, great-granddaughters, might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land."

Gymnastics Coach In Child Pornography Case Sentenced To Prison

RadioOnFire.com - A former Howard County youth gymnastics coach was sentenced in federal court Friday to six years in prison as part of a plea deal for distribution of child pornography, prosecutors say.
Paul Bollinger, 57, was also ordered to serve 12 years of supervised released by U.S. District Judge Marvin J. Garbis in federal court in Baltimore.
Bollinger worked as a gymnastics coach in Maryland for more than 30 years until his arrest.
Bollinger admitted in his plea agreement that on May 15 of last year, he distributed computer files containing videos of child pornography using a file sharing program. An undercover Baltimore County detective downloaded at least 10 of those files.
A state search warrant later executed on Bollinger's Windsor Mill home led to the discovery of a desktop on and running file sharing software, with numerous file titles investigators say were indicative of child pornography being actively shared and downloaded. The desktop wallpaper depicted a naked girl lying on her stomach. Police seized the computer and other drives containing more than 40,000 images and 100 videos of child pornography. Police also found more than 100 pages of handwritten stories about a man having sex with young children.
