Former Western High School Principal Pleads Guilty To Stealing More Than $50K In Student Funds

RadioOnFire.com - A former Baltimore principal has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $50,000 from Western High School's student activity fund to make personal purchases.

Maryland State Prosecutor Emmet Davitt announced Tuesday that former principal Alisha Trusty has pleaded guilty Monday to felony theft. City school officials referred the matter to the Davitt's office after auditors found irregularities. Sentencing is set for Oct. 6.

According to a statement of facts, from 2011 to 2014 Trusty used the fund's debit card and checks to pay bills, buy personal items and spent more than $2,800 on 19 nights at New Jersey hotel while on medical leave. Authorities say that the 38-year-old Trusty earned a second salary from an educational institution while on paid leave.

Trusty now lives in Texas. Her attorney declined to comment.

Freddie Gray Autopsy Report Finds He Suffered A "High-Energy Injury" In Police Van

RadioOnFire.com - An autopsy report obtained by The Baltimore Sun says a medical examiner has found Freddie Gray suffered a "high-energy injury" while riding in a Baltimore police van and the failure of officers to follow procedures makes the death a homicide.

Police arrested Gray on April 12 and he died a week later, prompting protests and rioting.

A grand jury indicted six officers on various charges; one officer faces the most serious charge of second-degree "depraved-heart" murder. They have pleaded not guilty.
The Sun reported Tuesday that the autopsy found the injury, similar to those suffered in shallow-water diving, was most likely caused when the van suddenly decelerated. The report says Gray's death could not be ruled an accident and is instead a homicide because officers didn't follow safety procedures "through acts of omission."
Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby released the following statement:
"I want to make it very clear that the State's Attorney's Office did not release the Freddie Gray autopsy report. As I have repeatedly stated, I strongly condemn anyone with access to trial evidence who has leaked information prior to the resolution of this case."
Defense attorneys in the case have issued a joint statement. It reads:
"To be absolutely clear, neither the six officers nor any of their attorneys have a copy of the autopsy report, nor have we ever seen it.  It was our understanding that the only copy of the autopsy was in the possession of the State's Attorney's Office and the State Medical Examiner's Office.  We were expecting, and continue to expect, all discovery, including the autopsy, to be turned over to us by no later than Friday, June 26."
The six officers are scheduled to go on trial October 13 on charges ranging from assault to second-degree "depraved-heart" murder.
Although officers loaded Gray into the van on his abdomen, the medical examiner surmised Gray may have gotten to his feet, then been thrown into a wall when the van abruptly changed direction. Because Gray wasn't belted in and had his wrists and ankles shackled, he was "at risk for an unsupported fall during acceleration or deceleration of the van."

Police and an attorney for the Gray family have said previously that Gray suffered a severe spine injury.

At the University of Maryland Medical Center, Gray tested positive for opiates and cannabinoid, according to the autopsy.

According to the report's chronology:

- Gray suffered no injuries to suggest a neck hold or anything stemming from physical restraint during his arrest. Assistant Medical Examiner Carol Allan noted that in bystander video, Gray is seen bearing weight on his legs and speaking as officers load him into the van.

- The van made several stops. At the second stop, officers placed an identification band and leg restraints on Gray. "Reportedly, Mr. Gray was still yelling and shaking the van. He was removed from the van and placed on the ground in a kneeling position, facing the van doors, while ankle cuffs were placed, and then slid onto the floor of the van, belly down and head first, reportedly still verbally and physically active." The most significant injury to Gray may have occurred after this stop.

- During a fourth stop, authorities said van driver Caesar Goodson called for help and Officer William Porter got involved. "The assisting officer opened the doors and observed Mr. Gray lying belly down on the floor with his head facing the cabin compartment, and reportedly he was asking for help, saying he couldn't breathe, couldn't get up, and needed a medic. The officer assisted Mr. Gray to the bench and the van continued on its way."

- When the van made a fifth stop to pick up a second arrestee, Sgt. Alicia White helped check on Gray. "Mr. Gray was found kneeling on the floor, facing the front of the van and slumped over to his right against the bench, and reportedly appeared lethargic with minimal responses to direct questions."

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan Announces He Has ‘Advanced’ Cancer

RadioOnFire.com - Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan disclosed Monday that he has been diagnosed with late stage 3 non-Hodgkins lymphoma, which he described as “a very advanced and very aggressive” form of cancer.

Hogan, 59, was sworn into office in January after winning an upset victory over then-Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown (D).

He said he would soon begin aggressive chemotherapy treatments, and would rely on Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford (R) to fill in for him on state business as needed.

He described the cancer as a lymphoma, and said it had spread through his abdomen and was “pressing up against my spinal column.”

Hogan’s wife Yumi, his daughters and sons-in-law and his young granddaughter were in the room for the announcement, along with his two younger brothers and members of his cabinet. Hogan missed numerous meetings and public appearances since returning from a trade mission in Asia nearly two weeks ago.

He said on Monday that most of the absences were because he was having numerous tests and appointments with medical professionals to determine the extent of his disease and the best course of treatment.

Former Ravens Cheerleader Pleads Guilty To 4th Degree Rape

RadioOnFire.com A former Baltimore Ravens cheerleader pleaded guilty on Tuesday in a Delaware court to a charge of raping a 15-year-old boy who was a classmate of one of her children, according to court documents.
Molly Shattuck, a 48-year-old former cheerleader for the National Football League team, could face a sentence of up to 15 years in prison for her conviction under state law.
She entered a guilty plea to one count of fourth-degree rape in the Sussex County Superior Court in Georgetown, Delaware, the court papers said. She is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 21. As part of the plea agreement, Judge E. Scott Bradley prohibited Shattuck from contacting the boy or having unsupervised contact with minors except her own children, according to the court documents.
Shattuck, who is from a Baltimore suburb, must also register as a sex offender, undergo a mental health evaluation and receive sexual disorder counseling, the judge ordered.
Shattuck's relationship with the boy began online in May 2014 and she invited him, along with her three children and their friends, to a vacation rental home in Delaware over the Labor Day weekend.
She gave alcohol to the boy and performed oral sex on him, according to court documents. He later told police.
Shattuck joined the Ravens cheerleaders in 2005, becoming the oldest NFL cheerleader in history. She cheered with the team until 2007, and then coached its cheerleading squad for six years.

11-Year-Old Student Petitions To Close Schools On Muslim Holidays

RadioOnFire.com - New efforts to get Montgomery County schools to show the same respect to Muslim holidays as they do for Christian and Jewish holy days.

In the past, it’s been Muslim parents and Muslim community leaders arguing their faith isn’t being treated equally. But this time, it’s a non-Muslim, and it’s her age that’s even more surprising.

Eleanor Clemans-Cope, 11, isn’t just skilled with a soccer ball, she’s skilled with her words.

“It’s really not fair to give some people their holidays off and other people just don’t get holidays off,” said Clemans-Cope.

The soon-to-be sixth grader asked her fellow students at Chevy Chase Elementary School to imagine having to take an exam on Christmas or Passover.

It’s an idea so crazy that many of her fellow Christian and Jewish students began to understand why Muslim students think schools should be closed on their two most important holidays called Eid.

Soon, 170 kids signed Eleanor’s petition, asking the school board to close on the Eid holidays. Last year, Muslim groups tried and failed to convince Montgomery County schools to close on the Eid holidays.

“When Eid falls on a school day, students are marked absent. It’s an excused absence, but it’s still an absence. So it ruins their perfect attendance. They miss classroom instruction, they miss exams, quizzes,” said Zainab Chaudry, Equality for Eid Coalition.

The school system says they can only justify closing if enough kids are absent on a given day ever year. That gives Eleanor an idea.

“I think the next step is to organize a teach-in or something at a place or many places to learn about Eid on the next Eid that’s on a school day that’s not taken off,” she said.

This year, one of the Eid holidays just so happens to fall on the same day as Yom Kippur. Since schools are closed for Yom Kippur, Muslim kids get that holiday off this year by coincidence.

Several school districts in five states, including New York, have already moved to close on both of the Muslim holidays.
